About Me

Welcome, writer! I'm Alder (Ash) Van Otterloo (they/he), and I get excited about stories. Deep in my gut, I believe sharing our lives and imaginations is key to creating a web of empathy within the global collective. â€‹

We've been sharing tales since long before books existed. Every person is a storyteller. 

​

However (speaking from experience!), I know sometimes the road from idea to book can feel like a bumpy process.

​

What I offer is a skillset that gives your unique voice a good shot at connecting with your intended audience.

 

My help can provide some emotional perspective in areas outside your lived experience, help tie up any loose ends you may have missed during your writing process, and bring an experienced, constructive eye as you put your best foot forward in query letters and agent page requests.

My feedback style is honest, positive, & concise, with plenty of enthusiasm for helping you showcase your dreams!

Cultural accuracy/sensitivity feedback 

Reading and honest feedback from a white, southern US, queer, transmasc, nonbinary, OCD, anxiety, neurodivergent, PTSD and trauma-informed perspective.

(I list these identities to share both the scope and limitations of my perspective. My name may not be claimed or credited. My feedback does not speak for an entire community, nor does it excuse an author from taking moral responsibility for their own work.)

Copyediting/Proofreading

  • Fiction/Nonfiction copyediting: .02/word ($50 min)

  • Query letter critique: $45 (one page)

  • Synopsis critique: $45/page (double space, size 12 font)

  • First 15 pages: $45 (double space, size 12 font)

  • 30-60min Zoom creative consultation for: writers, aspiring authors, querying authors, and fledgeling copyeditors!

    This could look like: Q&A, query writing advice, finding the thematic heart of your story, character arc development, brainstorming plot solutions, new author questions, and practical craft advice. 

  • $25/30min (Trans & queer BIPOC writer appreciation rate of $15/30min)
